Cross-slab, Tomgraney, Co. Clare

In the vicinity of Tuamgraney, Co. Clare, there are two early medieval carved stones that nobody can currently account for.

They were last seen in a nearby house, probably sometime in the 1940s or 1950s, and then, in the understated language of the archaeological record, they were simply lost.

The two cross-slabs, a type of flat or roughly shaped stone bearing an incised or carved cross, were not discovered through any formal excavation. They turned up in the graveyard attached to Tuamgraney church during ordinary grave-digging, and were noted by the antiquarian T. J. Westropp in 1909. The slab in question carried a cross with interlaced ends, a form of decoration in which the arms of the cross terminate in looping, intertwined work rather than plain terminals. Westropp observed that this carving was more carefully executed than that on its companion stone, which bore a similar design but also carried an inscription. The absence of any inscription on this slab sets it apart from the other and, as scholars Okasha and Forsyth noted in their 2001 study of the site, the two pieces were removed to a nearby house at some point in the mid-twentieth century, after which all trace of them disappears. Whether they were broken up, built into a wall, buried, or simply moved on is not recorded. What remains is the description: a well-cut cross, interlaced ends, no inscription, and a last known location that has yielded nothing.
