Cross, Slievemore, Co. Mayo

On the southern slope of Slievemore, the great quartzite mountain that forms the spine of Achill Island in County Mayo, there stands a cross whose particulars remain largely unrecorded in any publicly accessible form.

That absence is itself telling. Slievemore is a place where the layers of human activity run unusually deep, from the megalithic court tomb near its base to the famous deserted village of stone cottages that stretches along its lower reaches, abandoned in stages during and after the Famine years of the 1840s. A cross on this mountain sits within that long, complicated history of habitation, devotion, and departure.

Slievemore, whose name derives from the Irish for great mountain, rises to around 671 metres and dominates the northern part of Achill. The deserted village at its foot was not simply left empty in one moment of crisis; it had also functioned as a booley settlement, where families moved seasonally with their cattle during summer grazing, a practice known in Irish as booleying. The presence of a cross somewhere on or near this mountain would fit a wider pattern of wayside and boundary markers, penitential stations, and devotional sites that are common across the west of Ireland, many of them associated with patterns, the local term for a pilgrimage or devotional gathering at a sacred site. Without further documentation it is not possible to say more about this particular cross, when it was erected, by whom, or what purpose it originally served.
