Cross – Wayside cross, Castlereagh, Co. Mayo

Along a road in the townland of Castlereagh in County Mayo, a wayside cross marks a spot that once seemed worth marking.

These small roadside crosses are among the most quietly persistent features of the Irish rural landscape, easy to pass without noticing and easier still to forget. They were raised for reasons that varied considerably: to mark the site of a sudden death, to indicate a boundary, to serve as a station for open-air prayer, or simply to sanctify a stretch of road that local people travelled regularly. Whatever prompted this one, it has outlasted the memory of the occasion.
