Cross – Wayside cross, Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny

Along the roads into Inistioge, a small Kilkenny village well known for its riverside setting on the Nore, there stands a wayside cross, the kind of monument that most people pass without a second glance.

Wayside crosses are among the quieter survivors of Irish devotional culture, erected at roadsides, field boundaries, and parish margins over many centuries. They served as markers for prayer, for the blessing of travellers, or to commemorate a death at or near that spot. Some are elaborately carved; others are little more than a rough stone set upright in the earth, their original inscriptions long since worn smooth by weather.

Inistioge itself has a layered past. The village grew around an Augustinian priory founded in the thirteenth century, and the surrounding landscape holds numerous recorded monuments from prehistoric through to post-medieval periods. Wayside crosses in this part of Kilkenny tend to date from the medieval or early modern period, though without specific documentation for this particular example it is difficult to say more about its age, form, or the circumstances of its placement. What can be said is that its survival as a recorded monument, however briefly noted, places it in a category of objects that communities once considered worth preserving and marking, even when the reasons for their original erection had become obscure.
