Dermot and Grania’s Bed, Killevny, Co. Galway

Scattered across Ireland, there are dozens of megalithic monuments that locals have named after Dermot and Grania, the fugitive lovers of Irish mythology whose flight from the High King Fionn Mac Cumhaill took them, according to tradition, to a great many inconvenient and wind-exposed places.

The name attached itself especially to dolmens, where the large capstone sheltering two uprights looked, to a fanciful eye, like a roof under which the couple might have slept for a night. At Killevny in County Galway, the name has migrated onto something rather different: a circular barrow, a type of prehistoric burial mound, that sits quietly in the landscape with its own peculiar character.

The mound itself is well-preserved and measures some 23 metres in diameter, with a flat-topped central rise of roughly 5.3 metres across and a maximum height of 1.3 metres. Around it runs a fosse, the shallow encircling ditch that is a defining feature of a ring-barrow, here about 3 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep, with a narrow drain extending off to the north-north-east. Cattle have worked away at the sides of the mound over the years, eroding and compressing the earth until a ledge-like step has formed around the middle, giving the whole structure the odd visual effect of a smaller mound sitting on top of a larger one. A second possible barrow lies around 50 metres to the south-west, and a ring-barrow of a different type sits approximately 30 metres to the north-west. The cluster suggests this was once a deliberate, considered landscape of the dead, documented by de Valera and Ó Nualláin in 1972.
