Designed Landscapes
On the southern shore of Cork Harbour, at Rostellan, there survives the remnant of a carefully composed landscape feature: a belvedere, the kind of elevated or purpose-built structure designed not for habitation but purely for the pleasures of a view.
These ornamental buildings were a fashionable element of eighteenth and nineteenth century demesne design in Ireland, positioned to frame a prospect across water, woodland, or open parkland, and Rostellan's example belongs to that tradition of landscape architecture in which the act of looking was itself considered worthy of architectural investment.
