Designed landscape feature, Corr, Co. Galway

Some places earn their entry in the historical record precisely by disappearing.

In the undulating grassland at Corr in County Galway, there is nothing left to see, and that absence is itself a small puzzle worth unpicking. What once stood here was, in all likelihood, a modest enclosed tree copse, the kind of planted feature that landowners used to shape and ornament their estates during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The enclosing bank that defined it is gone, removed by a bulldozer in the late 1970s, and the ground gives no sign that anything was ever there.

What we know of it comes entirely from maps. The 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map shows the feature as a roughly rectangular enclosure, approximately 56 metres north to south and 29 metres east to west, containing a mixed tree plantation. By the time the map was revised in 1946, the shape had changed on paper too, recorded now as an oval enclosure measuring around 60 metres by 40 metres. Whether that shift reflects genuine change on the ground over the intervening century, a difference in surveying judgement, or simply the natural softening of a planted boundary, is impossible to say. The cartographic evidence points away from any archaeological significance; this was most likely a designed landscape feature rather than a monument with prehistoric or early historic origins. Even so, it was considered worth recording, which is a reminder of how much of the Irish countryside was once subtly organised by planting, banking, and enclosure in ways that have since been quietly erased.
