Designed Landscapes
At Doon in County Galway, there survives what is recorded as a designed landscape feature, a category that hints at deliberate human shaping of the land, whether through ornamental planting, earthworks, water features, or some combination of all three.
Such features were typically associated with the demesne landscapes of landed estates, where the grounds surrounding a house were laid out according to aesthetic principles fashionable in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland and Britain. They are easily overlooked today, often surviving only as overgrown remnants, their original purpose obscured by time and changed ownership.
