Designed landscape feature, Laghtphilip, Co. Galway

At Laghtphilip in County Galway, there survives what is recorded simply as a designed landscape feature, a deliberately shaped element of a planned estate or demesne landscape whose precise character and history remain, for now, only lightly documented.

The designation itself is quietly intriguing. Designed landscape features, as a category, cover an unusually broad range of intentions and forms, from ornamental earthworks and ha-has to prospect mounds, follies, and sculpted water features, all united by the fact that someone, at some point, decided that the natural ground was insufficient and set out to improve upon it.
