Unlike the more familiar monuments of the Irish countryside, such as ringforts or standing stones, designed landscape features were deliberate acts of aesthetic arrangement, typically associated with demesne estates of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, where landowners shaped the ground itself into an expression of taste, wealth, or romantic sensibility. That one survives here, recorded but sparsely documented, gives the place a certain quality of incompleteness, a shape without a full story attached.
