Within the grounds of Portumna Demesne in County Galway there stands a folly, that most deliberately purposeless of architectural gestures.
Follies were a particular enthusiasm of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, built not to shelter or store or defend, but to catch the eye across a landscaped park, to suggest age or romance or learning, and occasionally to provide employment during hard times. That one survives here, on an estate with as layered a history as Portumna, is not surprising, but the structure itself remains quietly understated in the wider record.
