At Arnestown, a designed tree-ring, the kind of formal circular or oval woodland planting that Georgian and Victorian landowners used to ornament their estates and mark the skyline, survived long enough to be recorded on Ordnance Survey maps across more than a century, and then disappeared entirely.

The Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839 shows the enclosure as a substantial wooded feature, measuring roughly 150 metres north to south and 125 metres east to west. By the time the same series was revised and reissued in 1940, the outline had contracted slightly, to approximately 135 metres by 100 metres, but the planting was still clearly present. The site sits towards the top of an east-facing slope at the northern end of a northeast-to-southwest ridge, a position that would have made the canopy visible across a wide stretch of the surrounding countryside. That prominence was almost certainly the point. Tree-rings of this kind were a form of landscape design, planted to be seen from the house or from the road, giving shape and intention to an otherwise open hillside. The trees themselves were mature deciduous specimens, the kind that take generations to reach their full height. At some point after 1940, the entire wood was removed, leaving only the ground it once occupied.
