Designed Landscapes
In the Wicklow countryside, at a place called Bahana, trees have been planted in a deliberate ring, a quiet geometric signature left on the landscape by someone with a plan and the patience to see it through.
Tree-rings of this kind are a distinctive feature of designed landscapes in Ireland, most commonly associated with eighteenth and nineteenth century estate improvement, when landowners shaped their grounds according to fashionable ideas about the relationship between nature and artifice. A circle of trees planted on open ground could serve as a focal point, a shelter belt, or simply a mark of ownership made visible from a distance.
