At Curryglass in County Cork, a tree-ring survives as one of those quietly deliberate features of the Irish countryside that tend to be passed over without a second glance.
A tree-ring is exactly what the name suggests, a circular or near-circular plantation of trees, typically arranged as a single dense belt, designed to be seen rather than simply to grow. Unlike shelter belts or field boundaries, these plantings were ornamental in intention, laid out as part of a designed landscape to create visual interest, mark a prominence in the ground, or lend an air of careful cultivation to a demesne or estate.
