Designed Landscapes
In the Cork countryside near Farranavarra, a circle of trees arranged with deliberate, geometric intention marks the land in a way that has little to do with accident or nature.
These tree-rings, sometimes called ring plantations, are a feature of designed landscapes from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when landowners shaped their estates not only with formal gardens and avenues but with carefully placed stands of trees visible across open ground. The circle was a favoured form, legible from a distance and carrying associations with classical order and pastoral idealism.
