At Kilroe in County Galway, a tree-ring survives in the landscape, one of those quietly deliberate features that repays a second glance.
A tree-ring is exactly what the name suggests: a circular or near-circular plantation of trees, typically arranged to create a sheltered enclosure or to mark a designed landscape feature on an estate. Unlike the more familiar avenue or walled garden, tree-rings tend to attract less attention, their form most legible from above or at a distance, where the geometry of the planting becomes apparent against the surrounding fields.
