Designed landscape – tree-ring, Knockanagh, Co. Waterford

On a north-west-facing slope in Knockanagh, County Waterford, there is a wood whose outline was once neat enough to serve as a townland boundary. That is not something trees do by accident. The feature is classified as a designed landscape tree-ring, a plantation arranged deliberately into a geometric shape, and its circular form was precise enough in the mid-nineteenth century that its perimeter traced the administrative division between Knockanagh and the townland of Adamstown to the south and north-west.

The Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840 records it as a subcircular wooded enclosure, roughly 60 metres north to south and 50 metres east to west, a tidy ring of trees whose regularity would have read clearly against the open farmland around it. Such tree-rings were a feature of eighteenth and nineteenth-century estate landscaping in Ireland, planted as ornamental or sheltering elements, and sometimes placed on elevated ground where they would be visible from a house or avenue. By the time the 1926 Ordnance Survey edition was produced, the wood had grown or been extended into a larger, more irregular shape, described as subrectangular and measuring around 200 metres north-east to south-west by 60 metres north-west to south-east. The original circular discipline had given way to something more sprawling. Archaeological testing carried out in 2003, documented by Clarke in 2006, found no evidence that the site concealed anything older beneath it, no earthwork, no buried structure, nothing to suggest the trees were planted over a pre-existing antiquity. The wood, it seems, is simply what it appears to be: a deliberate planting, now mature and deciduous, whose chief interest lies in how clearly it was once shaped by human intention.
