Designed landscape – tree-ring, Leugh, Co. Kilkenny

There is a particular category of disappointment reserved for things that almost become history.

In the townland of Leugh in County Kilkenny, a small circular arrangement of trees occupies a quiet corner of the landscape, having spent the better part of a century hovering on the edge of the archaeological record before being quietly removed from consideration altogether.

The story begins with a map revision. When cartographers updated the six-inch Ordnance Survey maps around 1900, they noted a small irregular feature at Leugh that seemed, at least on paper, to warrant a second look. For decades it sat in that ambiguous category of features flagged as possibly significant, the kind of annotation that accumulates in margins and footnotes without ever quite resolving itself. When a field inspection was eventually carried out in 1987, the feature turned out to be a tree ring, a deliberately planted circle or cluster of trees of the kind sometimes laid out as part of estate landscaping or designed grounds. These plantings were a fairly common feature of improving landlords in Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, used to mark boundaries, shelter livestock, ornament a view, or simply assert that a particular piece of ground had been considered and arranged. Finding one on a map is not unusual; what is slightly unusual here is that this one was taken seriously enough to investigate, and then formally excluded from the archaeological record once its nature became clear.
