Designed landscape – tree-ring, Masonbrook, Co. Galway

At Masonbrook in County Galway, a circular planting of trees sits in the landscape in a way that suggests deliberate design rather than natural growth.

These tree-rings, sometimes called ring plantations, were a feature of demesne landscaping in Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when landowners shaped their estates according to fashionable aesthetic ideals borrowed from English and continental European traditions. The circular form was often purely ornamental, intended to punctuate a view or mark a boundary with a kind of planted punctuation.
