Designed Landscapes
At Mosestown in County Cork, a circular arrangement of trees marks the landscape in a way that quietly resists easy explanation.
Tree-rings of this kind, sometimes called ring plantations, were a feature of designed demesne landscapes in Ireland from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, typically laid out on the grounds of landed estates to create visual interest, provide shelter, or simply signal that someone with money and leisure had given thought to the view from the house. What survives at Mosestown is a remnant of that tradition, a deliberate imprint on the land that outlasts whatever social world produced it.
