Designed Landscapes
In the townland of Tobermina in County Galway, a tree-ring survives as a quiet remnant of deliberate landscape design, the kind of feature that tends to get overlooked in favour of more conspicuous monuments.
Tree-rings, sometimes called ring plantations, were a characteristic element of eighteenth and nineteenth-century estate landscaping in Ireland, typically formed by planting a circular or oval belt of trees on raised ground to create a visual accent in the wider demesne. They were ornamental in intention, functioning as eye-catchers in designed parkland, though they sometimes served a secondary purpose as shelter belts or game coverts.
