Earthwork, Errew, Co. Mayo

Near the shores of Lough Conn in County Mayo, an earthwork sits in the townland of Errew, recorded as a protected monument yet largely unaccompanied by any detailed public account of what it is, when it was made, or who made it.

That absence is itself a kind of information. Earthworks is a broad category in Irish archaeology, encompassing everything from prehistoric enclosures and ring barrows to the raised raths and cashels that once served as farmsteads throughout the early medieval period. Without further documentation, this particular example holds its silence.
