Earthwork, Kilcummin, Co. Mayo
Co. Mayo |
Ritual/Ceremonial
On the landward margins of Kilcummin in County Mayo, an earthwork sits in the landscape largely unannounced.
The term earthwork covers a broad family of man-made raised or cut features, from prehistoric enclosures and burial mounds to medieval field boundaries and defensive banks, and without further detail it is difficult to say precisely which tradition this one belongs to. That ambiguity is itself telling. Mayo's terrain holds an unusual density of such features, many of them poorly documented, their original purposes long since detached from any written record.
