Earthwork, Kilkee, Co. Clare
Co. Clare |
Ritual/Ceremonial
On the Atlantic edge of County Clare, where the Loop Head Peninsula meets some of the most restless coastline in Ireland, a classified earthwork sits near Kilkee without much fanfare or explanation.
Earthworks, as a category, cover a broad range of features, from prehistoric enclosures and field boundaries to the raised raths, or ringforts, that once served as defended farmsteads across early medieval Ireland. Which of these purposes this particular feature served, or what period it belongs to, remains difficult to say with any certainty given how little has been formally published about it. That ambiguity is itself quietly telling: Clare's western fringe contains far more archaeology than has been fully studied or described.
