Earthwork, Knappaghmanagh, Co. Mayo
Co. Mayo |
Ritual/Ceremonial
In the townland of Knappaghmanagh in County Mayo, an earthwork sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but not yet fully explained.
Earthworks of this kind are among the most ambiguous features in the Irish countryside; the term covers a wide range of man-made or partly man-made ground formations, from ancient enclosures and ringforts to field boundaries, burial mounds, and the remnants of defended settlements. Without more detailed documentation, the precise character of this particular example remains unclear, which is itself a reminder of how much of Mayo's archaeological fabric is still being worked through and catalogued.
