Earthwork, Pollnabunny, Co. Mayo

In the reclaimed pasture of Pollnabunny, in County Mayo, lies an archaeological site that has entirely ceased to exist above ground.

A circular earthwork, the kind of enclosed space that might once have served as a farmstead, a ritual boundary, or a place of assembly, was recorded on Ordnance Survey maps as recently as 1929, and yet it has since been so thoroughly levelled that no surface trace remains. The land offers no hint of what the cartographers once thought worth marking.
