Ecclesiastical Sites
In the townland of Ballaghboy in County Clare, the ground holds the outline of an early ecclesiastical enclosure, the kind of site that rarely draws attention yet speaks quietly to centuries of religious life in the Irish countryside.
These enclosures, typically circular or subcircular boundaries of earthwork or stone, once marked out sacred space in early medieval Ireland, separating a church, its associated buildings, and perhaps a burial ground from the surrounding farmland. They are among the most numerous monument types in the Irish landscape, yet individually they remain poorly understood, their histories dissolved into the fields around them.
