Ecclesiastical site, Annagh, Co. Sligo

On a low peninsula pushing westward into the southern reaches of Lough Gara in County Sligo, a faint arc of earth and stone curves through rough pasture, half-buried under grass and brambles.

Local tradition holds that this was once the site of a monastery or convent, though almost nothing remains to confirm it. The bank itself is modest to the point of near-invisibility, no more than half a metre high in places and roughly two and a half metres wide, tracing a shallow curve of about twenty metres between two existing field boundaries. Near one end of the arc, a small cluster of stones just breaks the surface. Behind the arc, the ground runs northward for about twenty metres before dropping away at a low scarp to a flat, damp expanse that stretches to the lake shore, ground that was probably flooded in earlier centuries when water levels in the lough sat higher than they do today.

The tradition of a religious foundation here was shared by local informant Kevin Forde in 2020, but it has so far proved impossible to anchor to any written record. The site does not appear in Aubrey Gwynn and R. N. Hadcock's standard reference work on medieval religious houses in Ireland, published in 1970, which catalogued monastic and conventual foundations across the country. The absence is notable. Whether the community, if one existed, was simply too small or too short-lived to generate documentary traces, or whether the local memory preserves something genuinely older and otherwise unrecorded, remains an open question. The uneven ground enclosed by the arc hints at buried structures, and local tradition speaks of buildings in the vicinity, but nothing is now visible above the surface.
