Embanked enclosure, Kilclammon, Co. Wexford

At Kilclammon in County Wexford, there was once an oval earthwork sitting on a small bluff above a stream, its banks reaching nearly three and a half metres in height on the western side.

The structure had the proportions of a modest ringfort, which is the general term for the enclosed farmsteads, typically circular or oval, that were built across Ireland in the early medieval period and remained a feature of the rural landscape for centuries. What makes this particular example quietly notable is not any grand surviving monument, but its absence: the enclosure was recorded in some detail before 1988, and at some point after that it was removed entirely.

When surveyors measured and described the site, it occupied an oval footprint of roughly 42 metres east to west and 36 metres north to south. An earthen bank defined the perimeter, varying considerably in height depending on which side you approached. On the eastern, lower side it rose only about 0.7 metres above the surrounding ground, while to the north it reached 2.8 metres and to the west, 3.5 metres. Beyond the bank on the uphill arc from east around to west, a fosse, or external ditch, added further definition, its top measuring around six metres wide and dropping between half a metre and a metre in depth. The interior was slightly raised toward the north. A four-metre entrance gap opened at the east, and there was a ramp entrance through the western bank, though this was judged probably not original to the structure's construction. The positioning of the enclosure on a natural bluff overlooking a small stream running to the northwest would have been a deliberate choice, combining modest elevation with proximity to water in the way characteristic of enclosed rural settlements across the Irish landscape.

Nothing of this remains visible today. The site was gone by the time of updated records, cleared from a small corner of Wexford farmland without ceremony or memorial.
