Embanked enclosure, Taylorstown, Co. Wexford

On a small hill near Taylorstown in County Wexford, something circular once occupied the high ground.

It was substantial enough, originally around 45 to 50 metres in external diameter, and whoever made it chose their position deliberately. Today, most of it is gone, absorbed into the field system that has reshaped this corner of Wexford over the centuries. What remains is a fragment: a grass and fern-covered D-shaped area in the north-west quadrant, roughly 24 metres east to west and 19 metres north to south, defined by a low scarp no more than a metre high in places. Field banks running in two directions have cut across it, leaving this one quarter standing as the only visible survivor of what was once a complete circuit.

The enclosure appears on the 1839 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which was the first systematic large-scale mapping of Ireland and captured many features that were already ancient by the time surveyors arrived. The fact that it does not appear on later editions suggests the site was losing legibility even by the mid-nineteenth century, as agricultural improvement steadily reasserted itself over older earthworks. An embanked enclosure of this kind, a roughly circular area defined by an earthen bank and often an outer ditch or fosse, could have served any number of purposes across a long span of prehistory and the early medieval period. The outer fosse here, a ditch running outside the main enclosure, has an estimated diameter of around 90 metres north-east to south-west and no longer reads as an earthwork at ground level. It survives only as a vegetation mark, visible in aerial photographs taken in 2000, where differences in plant growth betray the buried outline of the old ditch beneath.
