Enclosure, Baile An Lochaigh, Co. Kerry

On the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, the landscape is so densely layered with early stone structures that individual sites can easily dissolve into the general texture of the terrain.

This small enclosure at Baile An Lochaigh is a good example of the kind of thing that rewards a second look. Modest in scale, roughly seven metres east to west and seven and a half metres north to south internally, it sits just to the west of a clochán, the beehive-shaped dry-stone cell associated with early medieval monastic and hermitic settlement in the west of Ireland. The two structures together suggest a cluster of activity rather than an isolated building, though the enclosure's precise function remains unspecified.

What makes the construction interesting is its opportunistic character. The walls are not built entirely from scratch; they combine natural rock outcrop with dry-stone walling, meaning the builders worked with the existing geology rather than against it. A smaller enclosure, four metres by one and a half metres, abuts the northern side, possibly serving as an annex or animal pen. This kind of attached secondary space is a practical feature found elsewhere in the region's early stone architecture, where the boundary between a domestic compound and a working agricultural space was often fluid. The site appears in J. Cuppage's archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne area, published in 1986 under the auspices of Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, which remains one of the most thorough regional surveys of early remains on the peninsula.
