Enclosure, Baile Uí Bhuinn, Co. Kerry

On the Ordnance Survey maps, a small circular enclosure is marked on a gentle south-east to east facing slope, roughly a hundred metres from the western shore of Brandon Bay.

Less than thirty metres across, it was the kind of site that could easily be mistaken for a ring fort or a cashel, a roughly circular enclosure defined by a bank or stone wall and associated with early medieval settlement or farming. Whether it was ever either of those things is now impossible to say with any certainty, because in 1981 the enclosure was levelled, along with several field walls in its immediate vicinity.

What remains is modest. The south-eastern sector survives as a level area with faint traces of a stony bank along its outer edge, just enough to suggest where the boundary once ran. The northern half has been reduced to a scatter of small stones, the residue of whatever was cleared away, though it is no longer possible to determine whether those stones came from the field walls or from the enclosing bank itself. The site was recorded in J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, the Corca Dhuibhne survey published by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, which catalogued a landscape extraordinarily dense with prehistoric and early medieval remains. The enclosure at Baile Uí Bhuinn appears there as entry number 633, one among hundreds, documented precisely because even then it was already slipping away.

There is something quietly sobering about a site whose main archaeological interest now lies in the fact of its own destruction. The 1981 levelling was not unusual for its time; agricultural improvement across Ireland in the mid to late twentieth century removed a great many earthworks that had survived for a millennium or more. What the Ordnance Survey map preserves, and what the 1986 survey captured before the ground settled completely, is the outline of something whose original purpose remains unknown.
