Enclosures
In the townland of Ballincolla in County Cork, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully explained.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and yet most quietly mysterious features of the Irish countryside. The term covers a broad range of earthworks, from early medieval ringforts, which were essentially enclosed farmsteads surrounded by a bank and ditch, to later settlement sites or field boundaries whose precise origins remain uncertain. The fact that one has been mapped and assigned a monument record here tells us that something deliberate was made in this place, by someone, at some point in the past. Beyond that, the record is currently silent.
