The enclosure measures roughly 70 metres along its longer axis and 42 metres across, which makes it a substantial structure, yet it registers in the landscape as little more than a spread of tumbled wall, the kind of thing that reads as geology until you look more carefully at the regularity of its outline.

What makes this site particularly layered is that it does not stand alone. It sits within an extensive multiperiod field system, meaning the land around it carries the traces of agricultural organisation from several different eras, the enclosure itself being just one episode in a long sequence of human activity on this hillside. Inside the oval, a cairn, a mound of stones typically associated with burial or land-marking, sits to the south of centre. A second cairn lies roughly 30 metres to its south-west, and its position is telling: it appears to fall directly on the line of the enclosure wall, which suggests it was built after the enclosure was already established, perhaps even using the wall's remains as a convenient platform or boundary marker. That kind of stratigraphic detail, one structure clearly overlying or interrupting another, is one of the few ways archaeologists can begin to sequence sites that have never been excavated.
