Enclosure, Ballybegly, Co. Donegal

Near the eastern shore of Lough Swilly in County Donegal, aerial photography has revealed an intriguing circular feature in the landscape at Ballybegly.

The cropmark, captured in photograph St.-Joseph AVR58, shows what appears to be an ancient enclosure that would have been invisible from ground level. These types of circular markings often indicate prehistoric settlement sites, where the buried remains of ditches and banks affect crop growth patterns, creating tell-tale signs visible only from above.

The site occupies prime agricultural land, which suggests its builders chose the location carefully; proximity to Lough Swilly would have provided access to both maritime resources and fresh water, whilst the quality of the surrounding soil would have supported farming activities. Enclosures like this one typically date from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period and served various purposes, from defended farmsteads to ceremonial spaces.

This particular discovery forms part of the broader archaeological landscape of County Donegal, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period to the 17th century, revealing the deep layers of human history embedded in Donegal's countryside. Though the Ballybegly enclosure remains unexcavated, its presence adds another piece to our understanding of how ancient communities organised themselves along the shores of one of Ireland's most significant sea inlets.
