Enclosure, Ballybegly, Co. Donegal

Near the eastern shore of Lough Swilly in Ballybegly, County Donegal, aerial photography has revealed an intriguing archaeological feature hidden beneath the modern landscape.

The photograph, taken as part of survey AVR 60 from St. Joseph, shows a distinctive circular cropmark that appears to represent an ancient enclosure with internal subdivisions. These markings, visible only from above, indicate where buried archaeological remains affect crop growth, creating patterns that reveal structures long since vanished from the surface.

The enclosure sits on particularly fertile land, which likely explains why this location was chosen by its original builders. The proximity to Lough Swilly would have provided additional advantages; easy access to water, fishing opportunities, and perhaps even maritime connections. The internal subdivisions visible in the cropmark suggest this wasn't simply a defensive structure, but rather a complex site that may have contained multiple buildings, activity areas, or agricultural plots within its boundaries.

This discovery forms part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which documented field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. The survey has been instrumental in mapping Donegal's rich archaeological heritage, with entries subsequently revised and updated as new information comes to light. Without aerial photography, sites like this Ballybegly enclosure would remain invisible to ground level observation, demonstrating how modern surveying techniques continue to reveal Ireland's hidden past.
