Enclosures
On aerial photographs of a gently south-facing slope in Ballyclemock, County Wexford, a perfectly circular mark appears in the soil, roughly fifty metres across.
It looks, at first glance, like the kind of enclosure that archaeologists get excited about: a fosse, or ditch, forming a neat ring in the cropmark record, the sort of feature that might once have enclosed a settlement, a ceremonial space, or a defended farmstead. The trouble is that it probably is not any of those things.
