Enclosure, Ballyconnoe, Co. Clare

On a north-west-facing slope in County Clare, a roughly circular stone wall sits quietly beneath a skin of grass, its outline still readable in the landscape despite centuries of change.

The enclosure at Ballyconnoe measures around 21 metres in diameter, a scale typical of the ringforts and enclosed farmsteads that once dotted early medieval Ireland, where a single family or small community would define their space with a bank, a wall, or a ditch. Here the defining element is a grassed-over stone wall, its original form softened to a low grassy ridge, belonging to a larger surrounding field system that gives some sense of the extent of human activity across this part of Clare.

The site was noted by Ros Ó Maoldúin and sits within rough pasture alongside other traces of organisation in the land. What makes it quietly interesting is its relationship to the enclosure that lies roughly 85 metres to the north-west, an oval structure that appears to share the same general territory. Later field walls, built at some point after the enclosure fell out of use, cut across it at the west and north sides, which is a common enough fate for early enclosed sites as agricultural patterns shifted over generations and older boundaries were absorbed or simply ignored. Those intrusive walls are now a useful detail: they help distinguish the earlier, curving line of the enclosure from the more angular geometry of post-medieval field division.
