That is precisely what makes it interesting. Beneath an ordinary stretch of flat pasture in County Kilkenny, a cluster of ancient enclosures lies completely invisible at ground level, their outlines detectable only by the instruments of geophysical survey. The site came to light not through excavation or aerial photography, but through the practical requirements of a proposed solar farm development, which prompted investigators to scan the ground before any construction began.

Geophysical work carried out in 2017 revealed not one but a whole complex of enclosures in the vicinity. Among them is a square annexe, roughly 40 metres across on its northwest to southeast axis, that sits immediately to the west of a similarly proportioned but more clearly defined square enclosure. The relationship between the two is telling: the annexe appears to have been formed by extending the north and south sides of the eastern enclosure outward, though on a slightly different alignment to the north, suggesting it was added at a later point or laid out by a different hand. The western boundary of the annexe is poorly defined and may once have been marked by a field boundary that has since been absorbed into the landscape. More intriguing still, portions of both the annexe and its eastern neighbour overlie an earlier enclosure, meaning the ground here contains at least three distinct phases of human activity, layered one upon another across an unknown span of time.
