Enclosure, Ballydunlea, Co. Kerry

At Ballydunlea in County Kerry, a small earthen enclosure sits in an arrangement that is quietly telling: it was built not on open ground, but directly on top of the bank of an older enclosure beneath it.

That kind of layering, one structure borrowing the bones of another, suggests a landscape used and reused across generations, with each period finding something useful in what the last left behind.

The enclosure itself is modest in scale, measuring 28 metres north to south and 23 metres east to west. What makes it worth attention is the detail of its construction. The earthen banks average 7 metres in width, widening to 10 metres at the north-east, and while the external face rises only about half a metre from the surrounding ground, the interior sits noticeably lower, giving the enclosed area a slightly dished or bowl-like appearance. That interior depression means the internal bank height reaches closer to a metre, a modest but deliberate effect. Earthen enclosures of this kind are a common feature of the Irish countryside, typically serving as farmsteads, stock enclosures, or defended homesteads during the early medieval period, though the precise date and function of any individual example depends on excavation evidence that the surface alone cannot provide. What the survey of this Lee Valley site, carried out by Michael Connolly in 1996 and 1997, makes clear is the relationship between two distinct phases of activity on the same spot, the later enclosure making use of the earlier one's boundaries as a foundation or convenience, in a way that speaks to continuity rather than coincidence.
