Enclosures
In the townland of Ballykelly, in County Clare, there survives an ancient enclosure whose outline persists in the landscape despite the centuries that have passed over it.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most numerous and least understood monument types in Ireland. They range in origin from early medieval ringforts, which served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or kin group, to prehistoric ceremonial boundaries, and distinguishing between them often requires excavation or detailed survey work. The presence of one here, recorded but little elaborated upon, is itself a quiet indicator of how densely layered the Irish countryside is with traces of earlier occupation.
