Enclosure, Ballynacarriga, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the rough pasture of Ballynacarriga, beneath what is now an impenetrable tangle of overgrowth, lies a circular enclosure roughly 110 metres across.

That is a considerable size, comparable to a large field, yet the monument has effectively disappeared from the landscape, swallowed by vegetation dense enough to make the site entirely inaccessible. The enclosure is embanked, meaning it was defined by a raised earthen or stone bank around its perimeter, a form of enclosure found across Ireland and associated with a wide range of uses, from early medieval settlement and stock management to ceremonial purposes. Here, the bank and whatever it once contained are now invisible from ground level.

The site sits on a gentle south-facing slope in an area of outcropping limestone, with marshy ground adjoining to the south. That combination of thin limestone soils, uneven pasture, and adjacent wetland is characteristic of a particular kind of marginal landscape common in County Limerick, one that was often settled or enclosed in early periods precisely because the mix of terrain offered both firm ground and water. The enclosure was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1924, which means it was still legible as an earthwork in the early twentieth century. The notes were compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2011, by which point the site had become fully obscured by overgrowth.

Access to the enclosure is not currently possible. The surrounding and overlying thicket makes direct inspection impractical, and anyone visiting Ballynacarriga should expect to see little more than the overgrowth itself. The 1924 OS six-inch map remains the most useful reference for understanding where the monument sits within the broader landscape. The area of outcropping limestone nearby may be visible from the surrounding pasture, giving some sense of the topography that shaped the site's original position, even if the enclosure itself remains, for now, thoroughly out of reach.
