Enclosure, Ballynagalliagh, Co. Sligo

On a narrow ridge in County Sligo, a modest rectangular patch of raised ground sits so precisely on the summit that the land drops away sharply on both sides, north and south, as though the enclosure was placed there with deliberate care.

What remains is subtle enough to walk past without a second glance, yet the geometry is unmistakable once you begin to read the landscape.

The enclosure measures roughly 17 metres by 20 metres and is defined on several sides by a low, broad earthen bank, around 3.7 metres wide but only 0.3 metres in internal height, the kind of feature that centuries of weather and grazing have pressed nearly flat. At the outer base of the bank runs a fosse, a cut ditch, approximately 2.8 metres wide and 0.9 metres deep, though this only survives along the south-western to north-eastern arc, where the ridge levels out. Elsewhere, the steep natural slope of the ridge does the defensive or enclosing work itself, and the bank gives way to a scarp face standing about 1.8 metres high on the north-western side. On the north-eastern to south-eastern stretch, a later field bank and drainage channel have effectively absorbed the monument's edge into the ordinary agricultural infrastructure of the area, blurring the boundary between ancient enclosure and working farmland. No original entrance survives in a recognisable form, which leaves the question of how people moved in and out of the space entirely open. The name Ballynagalliagh adds a further layer of intrigue; in Irish placename tradition, variants of "cailleach" often carry associations with old women, hags, or supernatural figures, though what that connection might mean for this particular site remains unclear.
