Enclosure, Ballynahown, Co. Clare

On a limestone terrace in Ballynahown, County Clare, only half of an ancient enclosure survives above ground, and yet that partial arc is enough to suggest something substantial once stood here.

The eastern half of a roughly circular enclosure, estimated at around 54 metres across from north to south, traces a quiet curve across the rock, defined by a narrow wall built from upright slabs. The western portion has vanished, leaving visitors to mentally complete the circle.

The site sits within a broader prehistoric or early medieval field system, suggesting this was not an isolated structure but part of a managed, inhabited landscape. A second enclosure of slightly smaller dimensions lies immediately to the west, the two separated by a field wall that appears to have been added later, running roughly north-north-east to south-south-west. Whether the two enclosures were ever used simultaneously, or whether one preceded the other, is not clear, but their proximity points to a period of sustained activity in this area. Within the larger enclosure, just north of its centre, there is a possible hut site, the kind of low, circular or oval stone foundation that would once have sheltered a family or served as an ancillary building within a farmstead. Enclosures of this type are found widely across the west of Ireland and date broadly to the early medieval period, though many were built on foundations of much earlier use.

The limestone pavement setting gives the site an austere quality, and the views to the south and west, across the open country typical of this part of Clare, help convey why this terrace was chosen in the first place. The slab walling that defines the surviving arc is low and unobtrusive, easy to miss without some prior knowledge of what to look for, but once seen it is difficult to walk away without thinking about the lives organised within that vanished circle.
