Enclosures
In the townland of Ballynoony, in the quiet interior of County Kilkenny, there is an enclosure.
That word, deceptively plain, covers a great deal of Irish archaeological ground. Enclosures can be ringforts, the remains of early medieval farmsteads defined by an earthen bank and ditch; they can be burial sites, ceremonial spaces, or the ghostly outlines of settlements that predate any written record of the area. What makes the one at Ballynoony quietly interesting is precisely how little is currently known about it in any accessible form. It is a recorded monument, officially classified and mapped, yet its particulars remain, for the moment, out of reach.
