Enclosures
In the townland of Ballyquin Beg, in County Clare, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded but not yet fully explained.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common, and most quietly ambiguous, monument types in Ireland. The term covers a broad range of features, from the circular banks of early medieval ringforts, which served as farmsteads and status markers, to earlier prehistoric boundaries whose original purpose has long since blurred into the ground. Without excavation or close survey, many enclosures resist easy classification, which is part of what makes them interesting.
