Enclosure, Ballyroe, Co. Kilkenny

There is nothing to see at Ballyroe, and that is precisely what makes it worth knowing about.

On a flat terrace on the southern side of a quiet valley in County Kilkenny, a roughly circular earthwork once sat in the landscape, measuring around thirty metres across. Today the ground gives no indication it was ever there. The enclosure was levelled in 1960 as part of a land reclamation scheme, and the grass that replaced it shows no trace of what lay beneath.

The site was recorded on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839 and again on the 1900 revision, both showing a roughly circular enclosure with a field boundary running north to south along its eastern edge. Enclosures of this kind are among the most common monument types in the Irish countryside, typically interpreted as the remains of early medieval ringforts, which were enclosed farmsteads used roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They survive in their thousands across Ireland, but many have been lost to drainage schemes, ploughing, and reclamation work of the kind recorded here. Correspondence from the Office of Public Works dating to March 1960 documents the levelling of this particular example. A second enclosure, also now gone, was mapped approximately 150 metres to the north-east, suggesting the area once held a cluster of such sites within a relatively small stretch of valley floor.

The setting retains something of the character the maps describe. The terrace sits with open views to the north, east, and west across and along the valley, the kind of position that would have made practical sense for a farming settlement commanding sight lines over surrounding land. The archaeology, though, exists only on paper now.
