Enclosure, Ballyvoe, Co. Clare

A low ring of tumbled drystone wall sitting in rough pasture in County Clare is, at first glance, easy to dismiss as a field boundary that lost the will to stand.

Look more carefully, and the geometry gives it away: a near-perfect circle, twelve metres across on the interior, its collapsed wall still reaching about twenty-five centimetres above the surrounding ground at its highest. The interior is level and entirely featureless, offering no obvious clue as to what the space was originally meant to contain or protect.

What makes the site quietly interesting is its setting. It does not sit in isolation but within a very extensive landscape of field systems, enclosures, and trackways, a palimpsest of human organisation laid down across undulating coarse pasture at Ballyvoe. Circular enclosures of this kind are a common enough feature of the Irish countryside, used across many centuries for purposes ranging from farmstead enclosure to stock management, and their precise dating is notoriously difficult without excavation. This one was already old enough to merit recording on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840, where it appears as a small hachured circle, a cartographic shorthand indicating a raised or banked feature. By the 1916 edition it was shown as a solid line, suggesting that surveyors at that point read it differently, perhaps as a more defined boundary. The drystone wall itself, roughly 1.4 metres wide on the north-west side and slightly narrower elsewhere, is largely collapsed now and broken by numerous cattle-gaps opened over the years by farmers moving animals through the enclosure rather than around it.
