Enclosure, Baslickane, Co. Kerry

On the western bank of the Finnihy river in south Kerry, a stone enclosure sits unrecorded on the Ordnance Survey maps, swallowed almost entirely by vegetation and the debris of field clearance.

What little remains visible tells a careful story in miniature: a short exposed stretch of wall on the southern side, 1.8 metres wide, built in the drystone tradition, with an inner and outer face of laid stone sandwiching a rubble core between them. That sandwich construction, a technique that lends considerable mass and stability to a boundary wall, is one of the few diagnostic features still readable at the site. The rest, a roughly circular space measuring approximately 20 metres north to south and 19 metres east to west, has largely disappeared beneath growth and dumped stone.

Enclosures of this kind are found across Kerry and the wider Irish landscape, and while dating them without excavation is rarely straightforward, the drystone construction and the general form place this one in a long tradition of enclosed settlement or land management that stretches back through the early medieval period and possibly beyond. A hut site recorded a short distance to the north, in the same field, suggests the enclosure was not an isolated feature but part of a small cluster of related activity on this stretch of ground above the river. Whether the two were contemporary is unknown, but their proximity on the same riverbank hints at a landscape that was once more densely organised than it now appears. The enclosure and the hut site together appear in the archaeological survey of the Iveragh Peninsula compiled by A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan, published by Cork University Press in 1996, which remains one of the most thorough records of this part of Kerry's pre-modern landscape.
