Enclosure, Béal Deirg Beag, Co. Mayo

On the western edge of County Mayo, in a townland whose name translates roughly as "small red ford mouth", there sits an enclosure that has been recorded, catalogued, and largely left to its own quiet company.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet most varied monuments in the Irish landscape. The term covers a broad range of features, from the earthen ringforts of early medieval farmsteads to later pastoral enclosures whose banks simply kept livestock from straying, and without further detail it is often difficult to say with certainty which category a particular example belongs to. That ambiguity is part of what makes them worth paying attention to.

Béal Deirg Beag lies in the Erris region of north-west Mayo, a stretch of bogland, coastline, and low hill that has been inhabited, farmed, and worked for thousands of years. The area takes its name from the Béal Deirg, the red ford, a topographical marker rooted in the colour of the local soil or water. Enclosures in this part of Connacht frequently date to the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, when the ringfort, a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, formed the basic unit of rural settlement across Ireland. Whether this particular feature follows that pattern, or belongs to a different phase of land use entirely, remains a question the landscape holds without answering.
